Phoenix Wright: Mysteries Abound!

January 20, 2006 By R. LeFeuvre

Seeing as our Pheonix feature is up it's about time I fess up about something.

There's something about the game that has been bugging me since I got it. It has nothing to do with the fabulously quirky humor or wicked slick courtroom drama. Not even the crazy voodoo ghost possessions!

It's the logo.

More specifically, I'm bothered by his mouth from the logo.

You see... that dark hole in the middle of his face is Phoenix's dramatic, shouting objection-hole. But dammit, I can barely see it that way.

You know that "Old Woman/Young Lady" picture, or the "Two Faces/A Vase"? This Phoenix Wright logo follows their lead and presents me with a confusing alternate image.

I never saw that blackness that represents his mouth... as a mouth. I thought the dark bit it was a void... that the blackness was instead the space beneath a closed mouth and his shoulders.

That changes EVERYTHING! I saw this weird looking Phoenix head, tilted back perhaps, with an out of place long, skinny goatee.

Here... I'll use cutting edge future-tech to show you exactly what I'm referring too.

That section marked in red is what I thought was the strange goatee.

I knew it was Phoenix, the silhouette's hair is indicative enough of that, but I was befuddled by why Phoenix's face was so oddly shaped and what the hell that thing on his chin was!

Stupid negative space. I have a suspicion that I'm the only person to have seen it this way. :(

Dear Capcom,

May I request some nice eyes for the next version of the logo please.

From,
Someone with bad eyes.

P.S. Maybe it's from my Lazer Vizion.

Freak.

I saw that as some facial hair, and I had to look for a good 2 minutes to find the mouth.

I dunno, i always saw it as a mouth.

But then again, I've been conditioned from years of anime watching. There's a weird convention where you draw a character's profile, but when their mouth flaps, it flaps inside the sillouette, no matter how from-the-side it may be. This is really noticable in Evangelion.
