I have crashed my Prius for a second time.

November 7, 2005 By R. LeFeuvre

The software that is.

The Toyota Prius, for those not "in the know" is a Hybrid vehicle, having both an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. In the center console there's a small touch screen which allows you to monitor the gas millage, see how the car is functioning, use the radio, and other things.

If I leave the keys in the ignition and turned to the "on" position, it (like most cars) allows you to use the electrical components of the car, one of those being the touch screen. Twice now, after leaving the car in this state, the screen has WSOD'd! (That's White Screen of Death, of course!) The screen starts to flicker violently and then goes solid white!

I am then completely unable to start the car... for about 3 minutes.

I think there's some sorta of memory leak happening! It certainly adds up... I have to leave the car turned to 'on' (without the engine running) for quite some time and then, as though it were REBOOTING the firmware, it takes a bit of time before the damn thing responds again. (Time where, I can assure you, I'm acting cool but really think "oh shit oh shit oh shit".)

Crazy. The first time I thought it was a fluke... the second time I thought (like a tester) 'whoa I've recreated the bug!'... there will be no third time.

Poor car

It obviously doesn't like you leaving it in drive without the engine going. Lazy Prius.

Obviously I hate you for having a hybrid car.

Jerk.

Apparently Wired found the Prius noteworthy enough to include in their History's Worst Software Bugs article.

Be proud!
