Schoooooool's out forever!

September 23, 2005 By R. LeFeuvre

Well hot damn....

It's finally over. As of this evening I have a Bachelor's in Visual & Game Programming. And it all ended in a very anticlimactic way. No finals, no cramming -- in fact I was done with classes this week (and my grades submitted) but I had to continue to work on my portfolio for a show earlier this evening, so even though I was done with school... I still had homework.

So I find my self at home sorta having to tell myself I'm done and just trusting that it's for real. Although, looking at the diploma helps a lot :)

A strange thing: I'm entering a field where a degree like mine never existed. Current game programmers are just dudes with CS degrees. A degree in Game Design is still pretty new, but they still way more common that whatever my degree counts as. If fact, I am the first and only VGP graduate from my school this quarter! (There are 3 more next quarter, and several after that, but it's not exactly a jam-packed major) I'm not really sure what it will do for me, at least beyond the basics of having a Bachelor's degree in a programming field, but I'm excited to find out.

If fact... I'm just excited to get a job again. Work is so much better than school... for two reasons:
1) When you go home from work, that's it. At least for me, I leave work at the workplace. But with school I always had some homework that I could be doing, some due date that was sitting out on the horizon telling me that I shouldn't be having what ever fun I was trying to have.

2) Work earns you money. School earns you negative-money. AKA debt. And a shit load of it if you go to my school!

So next up... getting a job in the game industry. Woooo.

Once I sleep for a bit...
