GDC 2005: Day 3 - The day I got to see things

March 10, 2005 By R. LeFeuvre

But... you don't!

Sorry but I'm unable to grab my photos off my camera tonight so I'm going to leave the details of the day for a later post. What I can do is give you an idea of what I saw.

First I attended the Emily Dickinson design challenge. Lemme sum up: three game designers (this year it was Will Wright [the returning champ], Peter Molyneux and Clint Hocking) are each given a tough game idea to design. This year the game concept to flesh out was a based around the poetry and life of Emily Dickinson. It was very interesting. Brief:
Clint Hocking - Should have won.
Peter Molyneux - ... uh, was that a game design?
Will Wright - Used hypnosis (also known as comedy) to win over the crowd and win again. DAMN HIM!

I also sat in Peter Molyneux's "Gameplay Moves Forward into the 21st Century" which was supposed to be about what gameplay will be like in the 'future'. It turned out to be a 60 min Lionhead software demo. I guess in the future all gameplay will be Molyneuxed. More angry detail later.

The expo seems nice. Hopefully I'll get a chance to actually walk around it.

And finally - the award shows - both were entertaining and pleasant. There were some interesting flubs but overall it was a nice evening. Too bad the venue was way smaller than last year and I ended up sitting on the floor. At least near the stage so I got some decent pics (and also right next to the Sucker Punch table).
