Game Design Idea: The Ultimate Racing Game

February 27, 2005 By R. LeFeuvre

Okay, you know those cool navigation systems installed in cars that show you a map of where you are and can give you directions to any destination (the nice ones even have a friendly female voice that tells you when to turn)? I think that it's a technology that is being wasted with it's simple mapquest duties!

I want to use the system to create a racing game. It loads up checkpoints on the map and gives you the green flag. As you speed through town following the marked locations the system verifies that you hit each one and then clocks in your final time to a server that tracks the top 10!

It's like playing a video game but you do it in real life!! Real Virtuality™®(patent pending)!

You're thinking to yourself "But that's too dangerous Ronn, think of the rise in accidents. People would die!". I counter that argument with this statement : THINK HOW COOL IT WOULD BE.

I can see it now:

Microsoft Midtown Madness: GPS version

lol., you could do that with a PC and a 20.00 nav usb nav adapter.
then hack away at the code.

It could be alot more intresting if you could umm., network the game and iniate races with other cars equipted with this machine.

Your stupid.

WHY would it be cool? hmmm lets see...boot up the map..then it plots your course...then GO! yeah...FUN. Even IF it was legal there would be constant bitching on the time server of people saying "oh this little ol' lady was in my way I could have shaved off 10 sec!" ...what crap..like I need to hear MORE stupid people talk about their STUPID lives..hehe

Actually I just explained a lot of the internet...IT WILL BE A HIT!

Why do people post as Guests?

Your idea totally gave me the LOLLERSKATES, Ronn. You know what'd make it even better? ALCOHOL!

looking at this idea, it made me think - why not combine both downtown racing (a la crazy taxi, the gta series, and carmageddon) with cross-country racing (think rad racer, or for you movie buffs, cannonball run), and run a server that you can communicate with both fellow racers and truckers looking out for the cops?

If the software allowed it (as some newer gps systems do), areas that have police presence could be marked in real time as either GO or NO. so yes, you could drive like an idiot and realize that your 2003 pontiac grand prix gt pegs out at 115 mph when it's safe to, then slow down to 70 when there's a cop around as indicated by the map.

when this is published, sign me up. i am so game for this kind of racing (sorry , i'd rather watch my dog chase it's tail for hours instead of 43 people driving, thinking making left turns is a sport.) heck, we can even do clans. :D

Check out GPS::Tron they not only have come up with a good idea but they took it one step further and implemented it. On top of that, no one gets killed as it is much more of a thinking game than a speed game. The only problem is gas prices and the cost of GPS phones....

Is if it could track how many pedestrians you nailed while making the checkpoint circuit. You get extra points the more people you run down. CARMAGEDDON LIVE!!!

I love this idea. As a seasoned Solo 2 driver, I especially enjoy comparing my own skills and car to other peoples.

So how about this--your GPS system breaks down the road system into mini "events" or "features". Let's use an on-ramp as an example. You drive through it as fast as you can (or are willing).

Then, the GPS system tells you how fast other cars did it--so you can compare your Toyota Echo (30 mph) with say, a Lotus Elise. (120 mph) If you drive your "Echo" better than some other person with the same car (32 mph), your nickname can go on a "top score list", just like in the arcades.

How's that for reckless?

 --Steve-O

PS--I don't own an Echo...
