Bits I Love About Wii Sports #1: The Boxing Audience

February 10, 2007 By Glenn Turner

Wii Sports Logo

When I'm boxing an opponent and they hit the mat, be it for the first or fourth time, while the count is running for them to get up on their own two feet again, I can't help but scan the hundred or so audience members for anyone (as in Miis) that I recognize. Whenever I catch myself doing this, I can't help but recall generic Hollywood sports film scenes, or say, my old orchestral performances from my youth when I'd try and find your friends and family out from the crowd:

"Is that my friend Michael? I think I see Abigail! Hey, is that unitdaisy over there?? She came out to see my 50th bout! Hi honey!"

It's such a little detail, but it adds so much to the game, even if the boxing game itself is occasionally maddening.

Ha, interesting small feature.

Where does Nintendo come up with such useless little ideas?

Also, i noticed on WiiPlay in the table tennis that the crowd increases as the rally gets longer (single player mode), and by the end it's full (of the same set of Miis).

I also love it with the bowling when you let the ball fling backward, and it's like all my friends are in the room with me

I would argue that they are not useless features. They're interesting background components that make playing the games more believable and entertaining.

Also, I enjoy rooting for my Mii when he plays on someone's baseball team

i always go "oh crap" when i'm hitting with one of my parents' Miis because old people cant hit very well.

I appreciate this as well.

I picked up a Hitler sometime in the first week. Every time he's an outfielder and makes a catch, I bust a gut.

Seeing as I don't enjoy the boxing I must settle for finding them on neighboring lanes in Wii Bowling. Man, why can't Wiii Bowling be online so that my neighbors were actually other real bowlers.
