Resolute: Being a Happier Gamer in 2007

January 10, 2007 By Glenn Turner

Looking back over the past year, scrutinizing the games I've played, I'm not entirely happy. We're still cultivating our '2006 Retrospective' piece but, to paraphrase my portion, with the exception of a handful of titles I'm really not too happy with a lot of I have played this year, nor the amount of time I spent playing. As a result, here's my effort to be a slightly more content gamer – my new year gaming resolutions:

  • 5. Find an alternative to GameFly.

I really do like GameFly. I depend on them for a lot of this site's content, and I have been a subscriber of their service for over three years now. But simply put, they can't ship to Chicago to save their lives. Turnaround time for a title takes at least a week, if not longer, which considering Netflix has a daily turn-around for my location, is practically unacceptable. I love buying titles from them via their 'buy it now' option, their site is (mostly) nicely designed, support has always been extremely responsive and understanding, but I just can't keep wasting money on shipping times, especially when there are so many other alternatives available.

  • 4. Import more titles.

Apart from Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan and Samba de Amigo 2000, my library contains very few imported titles. Granted, I don't go much for console modding, but I am a fan of playing games I haven't played before, and Nintendo's region-free policy towards their handhelds is still fantastic. I've already kicked things off this year by finally ordering a copy of Rhythm Tengoku and, while I still have a long list of other non-U.S. titles to go, it's a start.

  • 3. Play more games outside of my 'comfort zone'.

It's no secret that I love my action games, my platformers, my rhythm games, my survival horror and adventure games. But I really haven't spent much time with genres like strategy games, sport games (if it's not described as 'arcade-y', I usually ignore it) and other genres I often overlook. Hell, I've practically ignored web-based interactive games/art like Inanimate Alice, which is close to a crime in my book. I've been playing in a bubble recently and it's time to expand my horizons.

  • 2. Play more missed classics.

Thanks to my restrictive upbringing and game-less college days, I've missed out on a lot of classic games over the years – especially in the 32 and 64-bit generations. It's time to catch-up. It's not as if finding the titles are hard – via our garagesaling exploits we've found enough classics to keep me busy for some time. The main problem is that I need to...

  • 1. Stop playing crap.

I've realized that I spend way too much time playing mediocre or just plain bad games when I could have been doing something better with my time. I wasted 25 hours of my life playing Yakuza which, while it's technically not crap – it's a serviceable beat-'em-up in the vein of River City Ransom – it's little more than that, at least in its U.S.-localized form. The story, as it comes off through the U.S. dialogue, is little more than awkwardly-delivered & predictable pulp, and that's the best part of the game. I wouldn't sit through the story for three hours if it were being aired as a film on FX one Sunday afternoon, so why should I waste 25 hours playing through it? While I'm sure there's an article in the distillation of pacing via dubbing, it's probably best left to those who understand the source language of the material, and the full production costs of true localization.

And while I lament the time I spent with Yakuza, it's really the handful of hours I wasted with unplayable dreck like Jaws Unleashed or wading through uninspired torture-porn dungeon-puzzles in the insipid Trapt that really make me feel like I'm wasting my time. I don't actually rue playing them, but it's the amount of time I spent playing them (hours instead of, say, an hour) when I could have been doing something useful, like playing a game that doesn't bore or frustrate me, or catching up on my reading.

The truth of the matter is, half the time I spend time playing more recent, mediocre games as a way to try and keep the site content current and, apart from very rare cases, if the game's uninspired then similarly I'm going to be uninspired to write a piece about it. Then I sit down, try and milk something from the experience but it all just ends up as a total waste of days, if not weeks, of my leisure time. So, no more. No more playing games to completion 'just because there are only a few hours left'. No more time spent hoping 'maybe it'll improve after the fourth level' when the game's given me absolutely no reason to believe that might occur.

There we are – my five gaming resolutions. I'll be keeping track, via this journal entry's comments or in a later entry as to just how well I've stuck to them. I certainly hope I do keep to 'em, or else I'll be one pretty miserable gamer this year. So what are your plans to improve your gaming experiences in the new year?

I like your list, especially the aspects that will help you become a more "complete" gamer, if you will. I am going to try to get back into gaming this coming year. I haven't played more than an hour or so of video games for maybe a year and a half.

I'm still interested in playing, especially with the promises of the next gen systems, I just haven't had the time or ability recently. Using a GameFly-esque service may help me catch up on a year of missed gaming without costing me half of my income.

Good list. I don't think there IS a UK equivalent of Gamefly, so forget that. I import enough titles to keep me happy - I'm not as interested in bizarro games as you are, but I also got Ouendan and truly love it. Something rings true in the third point, but my brother simply buys games that are widely recognised as "good" regardless of the genre and if they're multiplayer, makes me play them. The same goes for the missed classics. And on the final point, I think that is mostly a side-effect of your position. I rarely buy anything when it first comes out so I get the benefit of two dozen reviews anyway.

All that said, my resolution is to actually finish games. Nowadays I tend to finish most games that I buy - simply because they're often shorter than they used to be (I'm a big fan of true RPGs, and you don't get many - if any - of those nowadays,) but there are plenty of good games that fell behind the desk, for want of better phrasing. I never completed Sacrifice, for example. Or Arcanum. Or Ghost Master. Or Startopia. Or Ninja Gaiden. Or Splinter Cell. Or Shenmue II.

Hey, let me know how this fairs. As you know I also use Gamefly. The turnaround rate is about 3-5 days for me, which I don't mind, but if there's a better service out there I'd love to know of it.
Looking at that site, Gamelender looks good. They even have PS1 games.

Ugh, I never follow up on resolutions, so I didnt make one. But I really wish I could be more like you. I havent touched my Xbox in months. I need to do a hardcore run through all my old games...Mercs, Halo, Forza (lol never even got halfway through), MGS2, Burnout Revenge...its just...I dunno. I'm not in a game playing mood really since the new year started.

I guess its my shift from xbox to PC. I have WoW, GTA SA, CSS, DOD, and Civ 4. I'm addicted to WoW. Its really sad. Although I dont hardcore grind, I played it for at least 3 hours today. Civ 4 is really the only game that I can say has intellectual value behind it. Its great fun, and if any of you have it, please do play with us.

Hell, I never finished Fable. :-/ Very end. Just havent finished it.

If there was a more active xbox gaming scene, it would be interesting again... But console games just dont interest me anymore.

Mememe.

I've got Psychonauts half done, I won't move forward in Guitar Hero until I 5-star everything, Wipeout: Pure is still sitting there, I'm not really sure if Monser Hunter ever ends, and I've never actually been able to get to the end of Einhander. I've got Jade Empire, Fatal Frame 2, KoToR 2, and Black waiting around to me to crack open. I still want to play the episodes of HL:2. I need to finish Gears, but I sorta gotta get home for that.

Basically, I need to make a concentrated effort to stop nursing/milking games and go ahead and finish them.

ah, einhander end boss. so very very dizzying

#8 jt-3d Jan 15, 2007 05:51am

I resolve to get even more games and spend more time playing. Starting, I think, with Civil War from the History Channel.

#9 Sanctuary Jan 15, 2007 01:27pm

I'm gonna play more classic games as well. This is especially good because my 360 broke the other day, so I only have my N64 for comfort now. I did buy Banjo Kazooie for it though (£7, bargain I say) so that's on my "To do" list

#10 Max Walrus Jan 15, 2007 06:11pm

My 360 is on the verge of breaking. What are you doing about it?

People should be required by law to beat Einhander at least once.

#12 Soup Jan 15, 2007 10:31pm

D. Riley
I'll second that. The immense feeling of satisfaction I felt after beating him fueled a positive attitude through my entire junior year in high school. So dizzy, so hard, but fun

Well said; I think this is always something 'serious' / critical gamers should be doing anyway.

I'm going to challenge myself by playing games not just outside my 'genre comfort zone' but also outside my 'moral comfort zone'. So, to kick things off, the first game I'm going to play is Super Columbine Massacre RPG! I've finally caved into the pressures of feeling irresponsible for not playing it off the back of the on-going Slamdance scandal.

Back within my genre comfort zone, I'm determined to finally complete both Under Defeat and Ikaruga (both on Dreamcast) sometime this year.

Max Walrus
It's still under warranty so I'll be sending it back to Microsoft when I've finished my exams (I'll do better without that distracting me)

I've now got Lylat Wars to play through as well

#15 Max Walrus Jan 16, 2007 11:17am

Mine is not, unfortunately.

Shoddy machine... it really is.

All warranties got extended, dude.

#17 D. Riley Jan 17, 2007 10:19am

Yeah, provided you bought it in the past year it's covered.
