Weekend Activities for the Karaoke Inclined

Karaoke Revolution: American Idol

So you say you don't care about the PS3 or the Wii this weekend? That's fine, but it does rather limit the number of public gaming activities available to you this weekend. However, if you live in the Chicagoland area there's one event that may be up your next-gen-eschewing alley: the Karaoke Revolution: American Idol Mall Tour hits its final stop on Saturday at the Woodfield Shopping Mall.

My understanding of the event is that you go up (all Tiffany-style), sing a few new songs from the upcoming Karaoke Revolution: American Idol game which judges and ranks you according to your ability. Then, in a few weeks, the collective eyes of the Internet will hone in on your performance to do what the Internet does best: mock & deride those just trying to have some fun.

If that sounds like your idea of a good time, hit up the official site for more details.

While I love practically anything and everything rhythm-game related (as my two dance mats, the Samba maracas, my beatmania deck and copy of Mad Maestro will attest), karaoke is where I draw the line. I heard myself sing once when I was much younger and swore to never, ever inflict that pain on anyone else's ears. Ever.

Cool kids go to Korean-run karaoke places in crime infested neighborhoods, pay $20 a head, and drink beer and sing songs for 3 or 4 hours before wandering home in a drunken stupor.

Such is our monthly affair. It doesn't sound as exciting if you can't get drunk or eat hot wings.
