Maybe I just don't understand the message behind a writer for this site telling us to pirate a game for him so he can do a project, but not being willing to tell us where to find a pirated copy because "pirating is wrong." And then having every other writer go out and pirate the game themselves so that they can contribute (correct me if I'm wrong).

It doesn't have to do with the ethics of pirating, but the legal ramifications of doing so. That's why.

And if you want a picture of me with my Gradius cart, I can do that.
