Multitap #8 - Embarrassing Companies, The Warp Pipe Project and Cake!

July 21, 2003 By Glenn Turner

Each week unitdaisy and peccaui take a sarcastic glance at the gaming world within the span of three questions. Why? That's just the way we work.

Recently, Games.Slashdot posted a link to Toastyfrog's unfinished list of the most embarrassing game companies. Any thoughts?

unitdaisy: I think this guy is really full of himself.

peccaui: Come now, we're talking about embarrassing game companies ... unless you're talking about Trip Hawkings.

unitdaisy: Some of his ramblings were as bloated as some of the companies he was talking about. But nonetheless, it was at times entertaining.

peccaui: We're not talking about the article, we're talking about embarrassing game companies. I know the list isn't finished yet, but I surely hope that Sega is on there.

unitdaisy: Well, since he already mentioned Sega derisively, I'm sure they will be - as well Atari. And really, what gaming company hasn't made mistakes?

peccaui: Yeah, especially with Capcom. When you're around for around 15 years or more, you're going to make mistakes and bounce back from them - no company is impervious.

unitdaisy: I think Acclaim is really the only one that deserves the condemnation of embarrassing.

peccaui: And 3DO. And now I'd add Nokia with their GBA slams. And Tiger so I can blame them for all those craptacular 'handheld' versions of games I ended up playing because I didn't have a NES.

unitdaisy: I think it's a question of hubris rather than embarrassment.

peccaui: Well, what is a fitting punishment for the worst companies?

unitdaisy: Being continually pursed by cosplayers of chracters from their most offending games.

peccaui: So you want them chased by wanna-be strippers? Well, knowing the ...girth of some cosplayers that might be nightmarish.

unitdaisy: No comment.

peccaui: Normally I'd say a traditional tarring and feathering would be appropriate, but really - they'd be getting off too easy. I want their epitaph on their tombstone to read 'I tried to purchase ad space on the living, tried to exploit the dead and encouraged automotive deaths.'

The Warp Pipe Project is a project to get Gamecube LAN games playable online which seemingly came out of no where. Any reactions?

peccaui: This is a hell of a niche project - the reason why XBConnect has done so well is because online capabilities are already built into the Xbox.

unitdaisy: What does it matter if you need an adapter?

peccaui: Because it's not built into the Gamecube.

unitdaisy: The PS2 one isn't built in, is it?

peccaui: No, but there is more support for it's modem and broadband adapter - S.O.C.O.M. and Amplitude for example. The GC has ...one game that people have been playing online for years already.

unitdaisy: So these people are building the beginnings of a support system. It has to start somewhere. And if they are successful and it becomes popular, then perhaps Nintendo will take that into account when developing their next piece of hardware.

peccaui: You're right - I'm just saying that it's a niche project. A good project, but a niche project. I highly doubt I'll be running out to buy a broadband adapter because of it, although if I had a Xbox I would already be on XBConnect just because I could try it out - no additional cost involved. Like I said, I'm not knocking it - the problem is with the capabilities of the Gamecube (though Nintendo wouldn't call it a problem, I'm sure.)

unitdaisy: Yeah, it's kind of a niche concept but the Gamecube is kind of a niche console right now and the people that have them are ardent fanboys, so I think a greater percentage of Gamecube owners are likely to try this than if this were happening on the Xbox.

peccaui: First - I refuse to accept that the Gamecube is a niche console, it's just as much of a console as the Xbox damnit! Secondly, we'll see just how many people get onto this system versus XBConnect - and I'm pretty sure that there will be less people on this than Xbconnect.

unitdaisy: Well of course! Because XBConnect is so easy - but I still think it will have a strong showing - stronger than you are expecting. Just wait until Mario Cart comes out! I don't suppose Soul Calibur II will be a LAN game, will it?

peccaui: If Soul Calibur II has LAN options I am so there. Well, I would except that all of my so-called friends refuse to buy Gamecubes.

unitdaisy: So you'll make new friends!

peccaui: That's what my mom told me when I went to a new grade school. All I got was a punch in the face. But look at me now!

Our third question became so wordy that we're slotting it for a special Multitap feature next week. Instead, we decided to discuss this Dreamcast cake:

Dreamcast Cake

peccaui: I ruined it when I tried to play it and burnt my finger trying to press the 'A' button.

unitdaisy: Perhaps you should have blown out the candles first.

peccaui: But I wanted to play Crazy Taxi...

unitdaisy: I probably shouldn't tell you that it didn't have a game loaded in it.

peccaui: Cheap bastard.

unitdaisy: Well, you did get two controllers.

peccaui: Where are my VMUs bitch?!

unitdaisy: You're not old enough for VMUs ... try again next year.

peccaui: You're getting a original GBA cake for your birthday missy. No SP for you.

unitdaisy: Only if I don't have to share.

peccaui: It'll be baked to scale too.
