Multitap #4 - Bake a Cake for Sega

June 11, 2003 By Glenn Turner

It was just announced that the movie adaptation of House of the Dead will be distributed by Artisan, and they've also picked up the distribution rights to Alone in the Dark, which starts shooting in July. With the recent influx of video game movies, what games do you think have been overlooked?

unitdaisy: Well they already optioned Crazy Taxi and Pac-Man, games I think should have been overlooked.

peccaui: Yeah, I can't really imagine those films ever getting actually released. And if they do, the world will probably be worse off because of it.

unitdaisy: How about Half-Life?

peccaui: You haven't even played Half-Life.

unitdaisy: But I saw the videos for Half-Life 2!

peccaui: Nice try Milhouse. I'd say Devil May Cry would make an excellent over-the-top goofy action film, but I think someone grabbed the rights to that too.

unitdaisy: Grim Fandango!

peccaui: I think the game itself is cinematic enough ... although, if they just made a music video with the guy that sings 'This little light of mine ...' I'd be all for that.

Sega has decided to close down all Dreamcast game servers except for their PSO servers, effective this month. Let's have a moment of silence, and brainstorm a way to mourn this solemn event.

peccaui: I'm going to paint my Dreamcast black and solder my network adapter shut.

unitdaisy: They already make black Dreamcasts.

peccaui: Then I'll paint your Dreamcast black.

unitdaisy: I'll make a Dreamcast cake and we can have a Dreamcast party.

peccaui: With Dreamcast tea and crackers? And the tea will be horribly bitter and the crackers will be hard to swallow?

unitdaisy: ...Yeah sure. That kind of a party.

peccaui: R.S.V.P. now kiddies.

Last week, a federal appeals court ruled that video games are protected by the First Amendment. For now we can sleep soundly at night, knowing that GTA4 won't be banned. How long do you think this judgement will last?

unitdaisy: I think it will be upheld - if they can make violent movies, I don't think they have a case against violent games. But it is possible the government will eventually step in and enforce a ratings system.

peccaui: Washington has already tried to enforce penalties for selling M rated games to minors - although that is currently being contested.

unitdaisy: I think there should be a enforcable ratings system.

peccaui: ...It's been a slow week. Can we talk about that cake instead?
