Gamer Remix Review #8: Mazedude - A Boy and His Blob

January 12, 2004 By Glenn Turner

I'm a big fan of video games. I'm also a huge music fan, especially of the electronic variety. Merging the two is one of life's more delicious inventions, like peanut butter & jelly or computers and a musty basement. Unfortunately, it appears that all too many people have not been exposed to this niche genre of music so in order to illuminate and thwart our current update policy, every Tuesday I'll take a short look at one of many fine video game remixes.

This week's remix: Mazedude - A Boy and His Blob (Cyborg Blobby)

Let's face it - we have been long over due for a new gamer remix review. So, I drag it back out from the archives and what do you get? A Boy and His Blob - a game that as far as I'm concerned, is only memorable because of the amount of hype it garnered way back in the day (especially the loads of coverage Nintendo Power shoved its way). Before I heard this remix I had completely forgotten what the main tune was and in fact, I had to dig up the game in order to compare & contrast. And let me say that this remix adds innovation, heart and good ol' broken frequency bubble gum to one hell of an obnoxious theme song.

What puts it heads about the original, not to mention other remixes that could potentially fill this week's article instead? Two things - fantastic use of sound engineering and actually piecing the sounds together into a coherent whole that just so happens to have a slight resemblance to the original theme song. According to the OC Remix entry, most of the sounds were taking by shoving any non-sound files into a tracker's sample bank and picking out whatever was somewhat listenable, which often sound slightly like slightly distorted pure tones. He then takes these sampled tones, chops, whirls, minces and spits them out into this electro cut-up of a remix. The results are candy to your ears, the way he bends and blends the melody adds grace and a keen sense of flow to the song that the original lacks.

Even if you don't carry a torch for A Boy and His Blob, or don't care much for music in the bubblegum-concrete style you will surely appreciate the freshness of this kind of a remix out there. Personally I wish there were more remixes out there that experimented with the actual sound design and took liberties with the original to graft a higher quality piece. But for now you can just listen to this track on repeat.
