I'm a big fan of video games. I'm also a huge music fan, especially of the electronic variety. Merging the two is one of life's more delicious inventions, like peanut butter & jelly or computers and a musty basement. Unfortunately, it appears that all too many people have not been exposed to this niche genre of music so in order to illuminate and thwart our current update policy, every Tuesday I'll take a short look at one of many fine video game remixes.
This week's remix: Jared Hudson - Metal Gear May Cry
This week we head a bit for the melodramatic with Jared Hudson's fusion of themes from Metal Gear Solid 2 and Devil May Cry. Hudson has previously produced quite a few more orchestral and soundtrack oriented compositions and this remix doesn't deviate. From the melancholy horns to the sweeping strings, simple but stately piano and choir, this mix oozes of atmosphere and bone-crushing sadness mixed with euphoria - an emotional rollercoaster ride that rivals any major motion picture's opening. More than any other piece I've heard in quite some time, this is a remix - you can recognize practically every section and pick it out, but the finished product is miles away from the originals. The end result is an exceptionally produced and extremely evocative piece that completely contorts the majestic hyperbole of the original Metal Gear Solid 2 theme, lends a serious air to Devil May Cry and we are all the better for it.
