Gamer Remix Review #10: Puffy - Maniac Mansion

February 4, 2004 By Glenn Turner

I'm a big fan of video games. I'm also a huge music fan, especially of the electronic variety. Merging the two is one of life's more delicious inventions, like peanut butter & jelly or computers and a musty basement. Unfortunately, it appears that all too many people have not been exposed to this niche genre of music so in order to illuminate and thwart our current update policy, every Tuesday I'll take a short look at one of many fine video game remixes.

This week's remix: Puffy - Maniac Mansion [intro]

Ahh, Maniac Mansion - what is there not to love about it? Certainly there is the introductory theme which, even on the very limited PC speakers at the time (the only way I played it when I was younger and pales to the original, much more musically adept C64 version), this tune still comes through loud and clear. And while there are some fine remixes of the theme out there already (such as Zeratul's Go Wild remix, whose only failing is that it's too short), if you described this remix to me I would scoff and say "I'm not into that sort of thing, even if it's spun from such glorious roots as Maniac Mansion." Fortunately you did not describe this remix to me, and I downloaded it of my own accord because as it turns out, the fusion of methodic, headbanging guitars and steady but never sluggish snares actually get my digits a-tappin' and head a-bobbin' afterall! In fact, what is really phenomenal about this remix is it's pacing, its build-up - over it's nigh four and a half minutes you go from slow as dirt into a cacophony of dissonant frequencies combined with a gravity-holding sludge of a rhythm guitar, all accompanied by some snazzy percussive pops - before you know it your heart is beating faster and faster, your feet are a flurry of activity and by the end you're an entire wreck right? But it was quite worth it wasn't it? Of course it was!

And really, doesn't it behoove you to recall the opening of Maniac Mansion anyway? Always take time out each day to do so. Plus, Maniac Mansion is one of the few video games to be turned into a prime-time non-animated television show!
