Chi-Style Drunksaling - The Drunkgamers Forum Weeks: Week #6

February 18, 2004 By Glenn Turner

The following is our sixth Chicago-Style Drunksaling post to the old Drunkgamers.com forums. If you're unfamiliar with Drunkgamers.com, occasionally they would go out drinking and go garage saling for video games and then post about it. Unitdaisy and I were inspired to do the same and posted the bulk of our first year finds in their forums, and in fact if it weren't for drunksaling you probably wouldn't be reading this site right now. We'll be posting one from the archives every other week or until the weather turns spring-like in Chicago which means that yes, we have quite a few of them. Even a few that I lost and recently recovered on an old hard drive.

Wow, a three week gap of time between the fifth and sixth update - this one is from July 20th, 2002. It was a quality week though ... well, at least compared to the fifth update it was.

Please remember that this write-up is over a year and a half old. Yes, Steel Battalion is out. Yes, I have a better idea as to what is a good Sega CD title. And no one remembers Bloodwake anymore.

It's 8:30am: we have 1/2 litre of rum, 1/2 litre of generic soda and corporate packaging to thwart open container laws. That's the way we do it. (Bonus points to those that figure out how much is in my belly at this point in time.)

peccaui: Our first sale was a short bus ride north. Here's what greeted us:

Awww, did your pre-schooler son do that? He did? Shoot him now, before he becomes a middle-manager.

unitdaisy: hmmm, bykes, he must have meant dykes, i hear they go cheap in this neighborhood...

Future 'spatial design' students please note: do not place 'Come on in - the water's fine!' signs on doors that are locked.

unitdaisy: and this one advertises nic-nacs, guess they don't place much importance on spelling at this school...

peccaui: As you can imagine, we were none-too-happy to find out that this 'multi-block garage sale' was a fundraising experiment by a private school that was funded by the lowest bidder. But hey, it wasn't a total loss!

"I've always wanted to master dBase and WordPerfect! Just let me finish programming my BASIC adventure game first!" - peccaui, six years old
"Thanks for nothing, shitwads." - peccaui, 25 years old.

peccaui: Next up - a 25 unit garage sale! One of them must have something decent!

#1 of 25. If only the rest of them are this enrapturing and flamboyant!

Blixa Bargeld told me this was the best game he's ever played!

unitdaisy: I could've used an extra sink this weekend to dump out my paint thinner, damn, should've picked that up...

This is kind of a handheld game, no?

unitdaisy refreshes herself with rummy goodness.

unitdaisy: i deserved rummy goodness having carried the powerdrink for most of the morning now...

The second peripheral of this type we've found in our Drunksaling adventures, and it's also the second peripheral that has been introduced to the inside of my pants!

peccaui: The only other items of note are some porn that some 65 year old woman was rifling through (sneb?) and this:

If I didn't already have the Season One on DVD, I'd be half tempted to buy this.

peccaui: Oh, we did happen to find this fine batch of PSX games:

Scrabble! For my Playstation! O' Lucky Day!

A present? For me? You shouldn't have ... Half of me was tempted to buy it, just to find out what it was.

unitdaisy: i find things like this at my parents' house all the time - christmas presents my mother wraps, hides, and forgets about...

peccaui: After running far away from the sweaty, horny masses of that neighborhood, we found ourselves in the epitome of chicago suburbia - without leaving the city! Ladies and gentlemen, I bring you: Roscoe Village!

Erg, sorry about the delay folks. We're lost.

peccaui: We stopped by a store that caters to geeks with esoteric taste, where I found a used copy of Ted McKeaver's Metroplis TPB for well, more than $2. Yeah, you may not care but someone here may understand why it please a bitter old man like myself.
unitdaisy: i bought write ups of old star trek episodes, ah i'm such a sucker for that sexy mr. spock...
peccaui: Yeah, written by the man that brought us such classics as Quozi ... brilliant stuff.

peccaui: Next up was an apartment sale that had nothing of note, except for this:

She's about as scary as Jason X.

peccaui: With no more garage sales on our list in the area, we visited a giant thrift store that contained the find of the week!

No one can tell that I'm drunk. Drunk and holding an Intellivision Voice Module.

unitdaisy: powerdrink was almost empty by then, except for a 1/2 inch of 90 degree swill
peccaui: it was the sweat from my balls!
unitdaisy: ok, next time i am bringing my own powerdrink (eeewwwww...)

Madden. on the 3DO. Yeah, that'll keep the system alive. Why didn't they bring out NFL1k94 for the NeoGeo?

These cursed discs were retrieved from the hands of a gamer slowly dying of scurvy. I made sure that unitdaisy carried them out for photo-mo-gro-phying.

peccaui: After running off with the voice module, we stumbled over the following table:

The blind leading the blind.

$10?! Why I oughta ... ooo pretty bottle.

unitdaisy: yeah we actually found one of these at the begining of the day and one near the end. either people were quickly buying and reselling across the city or we entered the gay sisters space time continuum

peccaui: Lastly, the Brown Elephant - resellers of games no one in their right mind would touch (with the exception of Super Hang-On).

Looks like Bloodwake-worthy material to me. Then again, I wouldn't know a good Sega CD title if it gave me tetanus.

Wait - Steel Battalion isn't out yet - is it?

And that brings us to the Find of the Week! It was the Intellivision Voice Module. I certainly hope it is compatible with my extra-special throat microphone.

Lesson of the Week Rum that is forced to withstand chicago's horrible heat for two hours does not taste too good. So always have a cooler available. Preferably a Sailor Moon cooler, just like the one guS has.
