Secrets of The New Gamer, Revealed!

November 23, 2004 By Glenn Turner

About The New Gamer

The unbridled history of The New Gamer is shrouded in shame and regret and best left to the ages. Unfortunately, we posted about it several times via the little 'News' category so it's not like our past is unavailable. However, displacing the sadness in those updates are a number of 'Ico 2' updates that you may find quaint, almost novel now that Wanda and the Colossus has been announced!

Still, if you're feeling a bit lethargic today then here's a short summary: a site called thenewsite was launched on March 3rd, 2003, a bit of a nudge and a wink at the DC release date of 9/9/99. Well, at least that's what I like to tell myself. thenewsite was to be a broad collection of voices to cover culture in all of its forms but, unfortunately only a small number of voices actually piped up. Eight months later, on November 3rd The New Gamer was launched from the poorly-updated ashes of thenewsite, solely dedicated to off-beat gaming criticism/journalism, or at least a simulacrum of such a thing.

The New Gamer's editors, participants and journeyfolks

G. Turner - email
It's me, really. Perhaps the saddest child gamer, Mr. Turner had a number of game magazine subscriptions he read religiously, but no video game consoles as a kid. Forced to feed his gaming tendencies solely through poorly scripted homemade BASIC text-adventure games and furtive gaming sessions over at friend's houses, when he finally got out into the real world with real money and real responsibilities he overcompensated for his game-less youth and co-created this site with unitdaisy. His favorite analytical method is neoformalism and he enjoys reading about abstract math, even though he's pretty awful at it.

D. Riley
Mr. Riley began practising his ninja-like skills of critical writing about five years ago when he realized the wide world of the internet was out there and that people might actually care about his opinion. This was not so, but it never stopped him from trying! Some years later he began writing for the late drunkgamers.com. Though never actually offered a staff position, in the twilight hours of that site he accounted for more reviews than the actual staff combined! Mr. Turner, recognizing the diamond in the rough (or cubic zirconium, if you prefer), quickly conscribed the listless boy into his oppressive regime, saving him from a life of cocktails comprised of Mad Dog 20-20 and Robotussin. Aside from a few real classics, Mr. Riley rarely gets excited about games anymore. However, he does get excited about finding new ways to insult them.

R. LeFeuvre
Mr. LeFeuvre is this that that AND that. He's REALLY not that, though, even though he says he is.

Didn't you guys have different names for, oh, years?

Yes, but we decided it was time to come out from the shadows and put our necks out on the line; or at least, our last names. Mock them as you may, they're much more pronouncable than our prior 'handles'. Well, except maybe for Mr. LeFeuvre's name. He gets the short end of the stick. So it goes.
